Well-Child Doctor Visits in India: What Happens, When, and What to Ask

The well-child visit — a scheduled appointment with your paediatrician when your baby is healthy, not sick — is one of the most valuable healthcare interactions you can have. These visits are not just about vaccinations. They are an opportunity to monitor growth and development, screen for potential problems early, address parental concerns, and receive anticipatory guidance about what is coming next.

How Often Should Your Baby See the Paediatrician?

The Indian Academy of Pediatrics recommends well-child visits at: birth (before hospital discharge), 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 14 weeks, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months, 2 years, and annually from 3 years. In private practice in Indian cities, the schedule varies between paediatricians but should include at minimum the vaccination visits plus 6-month developmental checks. Many families only visit when the baby is sick — this means developmental concerns and growth issues are often missed until they are more advanced.

What Happens at Each Visit

Weight, height, and head circumference are measured and plotted on the growth chart at every visit. The rate of growth and trajectory across visits is more informative than any single measurement. A developmental assessment evaluates motor (gross and fine), language, social, and cognitive milestones appropriate for the age. A physical examination from head to toe checks for any abnormalities. Vaccinations are given per schedule. Nutritional guidance is provided. Anticipatory guidance prepares you for the next developmental stage.

Questions Every Indian Parent Should Ask

At every visit: Is my baby growing adequately? Are there any developmental concerns? What milestone should I expect next and what would make you want to review sooner? What can I do to support their development at this stage? Is there anything specific to watch for this month?

At 6 months: Is my baby ready for solid foods? What is the sequence you recommend? Should I supplement with Vitamin D or iron given our diet? How do I handle the 6-week regression if it happens?

At 12 months: When should I transition from formula or breast to cow's milk? How much is appropriate? My toddler is not walking yet — when should I be concerned? My toddler is not saying any words — is this normal?

Getting the Most From the Visit in India

Write down your questions before the appointment — it is easy to forget them once you are in the room with a wriggly baby and a busy doctor. Indian paediatric practices can be very busy and appointments short. Prioritising your most important concerns means you get answers to what matters most. Bring your child health record book to every appointment and ensure the doctor records growth measurements. Keep records of vaccinations carefully — in India, the health record book is often the only comprehensive record.
