What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag for Delivery in India: Complete Checklist

Packing the hospital bag is one of the nesting instincts that takes over in the final weeks of pregnancy. Getting it right means you have everything you need in those first extraordinary days and do not send your partner on a midnight pharmacy run for something basic. Here is a realistic, India-specific checklist.

Documents — Pack These First

Original and photocopies of all ID documents for both parents. Health insurance card and policy details. Pre-registration forms for the hospital if you have them. Your entire antenatal record — scan reports, blood test results, the doctor's notes from every visit. Birth plan if you have one written. Blood group card for both parents. Emergency contact numbers written on paper (not just in your phone which may die).

For Labour and Delivery

Comfortable, loose clothing that opens at the front for skin-to-skin after birth. Non-slip slippers or socks. A hair tie or two. Snacks for your partner who may be in the room for many hours — Indian hospitals often have limited food access for companions. A phone charger. Earphones for music if you want it during labour. Small pillow from home if hospital pillows are inadequate.

For You Postpartum

Maternity pads — bring significantly more than you think you need, especially for the first 24 to 48 hours when bleeding is heavy. Old dark-coloured underwear or maternity underwear. Front-opening nightgowns or loose hospital gowns — front opening is essential for breastfeeding. Nursing bra (2 to 3 — you will sweat and need to change). Lanolin cream for nipples. Wet wipes and dry wipes. A lightweight robe for walking the corridors. Comfortable slippers. Basic toiletries including dry shampoo which is invaluable when showering is difficult.

For the Baby

3 to 4 soft cotton jhablas or onesies in newborn size. 2 to 3 pairs of soft cotton booties. 1 to 2 soft cotton caps. 2 to 3 cotton blankets or muslin swaddles. Nappies (bring more than the hospital provides — they charge per nappy in many Indian hospitals). Baby wipes that are fragrance-free and alcohol-free. A car seat if you are driving home — this is non-negotiable for safety though unfortunately not routine practice in India.

What Indian Hospitals Usually Provide

Better Indian private hospitals typically provide basic medications, IV supplies, basic meals, and some baby basics. Government hospitals vary significantly in what is provided. Ask your specific hospital what to bring and what they supply. Always bring more than you think you need for post-delivery comfort — the items you most regret not having are maternity pads and comfortable front-opening clothing.
