Baby Massage in India: Best Oils and Correct Technique

Malish or baby massage has been a part of Indian parenting for generations. Modern research now confirms what Indian grandmothers have always known: regular massage helps babies gain weight, sleep better, and feel more secure.

Benefits of Baby Massage

Studies show that regular massage helps premature babies gain weight faster, reduces colic and gas, improves sleep quality, and strengthens the parent-baby bond.

Which Oil to Use

Coconut oil — Best choice for most Indian babies. Lightweight, antibacterial, absorbs well. Ideal for hot climates.

Sesame oil (til ka tel) — Traditional choice. Slightly warming, good for cooler months. Rich in Vitamin E.

Mustard oil — Common in North India but use with caution. Can be irritating to sensitive skin. Do a patch test first.

Almond oil — Good for dry skin, rich in Vitamin E. Good choice for winter months.

Correct Technique

Choose a warm room. Lay your baby on a soft mat. Warm oil in your palms. Begin with the legs, then move to the tummy using clockwise circular strokes which helps with digestion. Massage the arms, chest, and finally the back.

When to Massage

Avoid massaging immediately after feeding. Best time is 30 minutes before a bath or 45 minutes after a feed. Once or twice daily for 10 to 15 minutes is ideal.
