How to Baby-Proof Your Indian Home: Room by Room Guide

Baby proofing is about removing the most serious hazards so your baby can explore safely. Indian homes have some specific hazards worth paying attention to.

Kitchen

The kitchen is the most dangerous room. Install a baby gate to keep your baby out when cooking. Store cleaning liquids in high or locked cupboards. The pressure cooker whistle can startle babies so try to have them away from the kitchen when using it.

Living Room

Cover electrical sockets with plug guards. Secure the TV unit to the wall. Remove glass-topped tables or cover sharp corners with foam guards. Keep coins, batteries, and small objects out of reach. Floor-level puja items like diyas and agarbatti should be well out of reach.

Bathroom

Never leave your baby alone near water even for a second. Store medicines out of reach. Use a non-slip mat in the bathroom. Keep the toilet lid down.

Indian-Specific Hazards

Inverter batteries contain acid and should be in locked rooms. Pooja room items like small idols and incense are choking hazards. Water storage pots should have lids.
