Breastfeeding Tips Every Indian Mother Needs to Know

Breast milk is the perfect food for your baby for the first 6 months of life. It provides all the nutrients your baby needs and protects against infections. Yet many Indian mothers struggle in the early weeks due to lack of support and information.

Getting the Latch Right

A good latch is the foundation of successful breastfeeding. Your baby should take in not just the nipple but a large portion of the areola. Signs of a good latch: you feel a strong tugging sensation but no pain, your baby's chin touches your breast, and you can hear swallowing.

How Often to Feed

Newborns need to feed 8 to 12 times in 24 hours. Feed on demand, not by the clock. Your baby will show hunger cues like rooting, sucking fists, or turning the head side to side.

Foods That Help Milk Supply

Indian kitchen staples that traditionally support milk production include methi seeds, jeera water, dalia porridge, green leafy vegetables, and dry fruits especially almonds and cashews. Stay well hydrated with at least 12 glasses of water daily.

Common Problems and Solutions

Sore nipples: Usually caused by poor latch. Apply a drop of breast milk after each feed and let it air dry.

Engorgement: Feed frequently, apply warm compresses before feeding, and cold compresses after.

Low milk supply: The best way to increase supply is to feed more often. Skin-to-skin contact also helps stimulate milk production.
