Indian Baby Food Protein Chart: Best Protein Foods for Each Age

Protein is critical for every stage of your baby's development — from the brain-building of early infancy to the muscle development of the toddler years. Indian parents have exceptional options for providing protein through traditional foods that are also familiar, affordable, and culturally appropriate. Here is a complete, practical guide.

6 to 8 Months: Introducing Protein Foods

The first protein food for most Indian babies is dal — specifically moong dal, which is the most easily digestible legume. Begin with dal ka paani (dal water) — strain the cooked dal liquid and serve at room temperature. Gradually progress to thinly mashed moong dal by 7 months. Moong dal provides 7g protein per 100g cooked, plus iron, folate, and fibre.

Egg yolk can be introduced from 6 to 7 months. One egg yolk provides 3g complete protein plus choline, Vitamin D, and iron. Start with a quarter of a soft-cooked yolk mixed into porridge and increase gradually. For non-vegetarian families, a small amount of finely mashed well-cooked fish (rawa fish or rohu) can begin at 8 months.

8 to 10 Months: Building the Protein Repertoire

By 8 months, the dal repertoire expands: toor dal, masoor dal, and chana dal are all introduced. Mixed dal khichdi with soft vegetables and ghee is an excellent complete meal — the rice-dal combination provides complete protein. Soft paneer cubes appear as finger food — 100g paneer provides 18g protein and most babies enjoy the mild flavour. Curd from 8 months provides protein plus probiotics.

10 to 12 Months: Expanding Further

Whole egg (yolk and white) from around 10 months. Rajma mashed well — higher protein than most dals at 9g per 100g cooked, and rich in iron and zinc. Chana (chickpeas) mashed or as hummus. For non-vegetarian families, soft cooked chicken shredded finely, and cooked and flaked fish in various preparations. Nut powders — ground almonds, cashews — added to porridge provide protein plus healthy fats.

12 Months to 2 Years: Full Variety

At 12 months, the full range of Indian protein foods is available: all dals and legumes, whole eggs, all dairy products, for non-vegetarians all meats and seafood. Rajma chawal is now a complete meal. Chole (chickpea curry) with roti is excellent nutrition. Egg burji (scrambled egg) with vegetables and soft roti is a favourite with most toddlers. Paneer in all its forms. Curd rice. Dal tadka with ghee. The Indian kitchen provides everything a growing toddler needs.
