Egg is arguably the single most nutritious food you can introduce to your baby. It contains complete protein (all essential amino acids), choline (critical for brain development), Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, selenium, and iron. For Indian vegetarian families, egg provides nutrients that are otherwise difficult to obtain from a plant-based diet.
When to Introduce Egg
The current guidance from the Indian Academy of Pediatrics and international paediatric organisations recommends introducing egg from around 6 months as part of early allergen introduction. Previous guidance to delay egg introduction until 1 year has been reversed by research showing early introduction reduces allergy risk.
Start with a small amount of well-cooked egg yolk from around 6 to 8 months. Egg white can be introduced from 8 to 10 months. Egg white contains the proteins most likely to cause allergic reaction, so introducing yolk first allows you to establish tolerance to the yolk before adding white.
Signs of Egg Allergy
After the first introduction, watch for 2 hours: hives or skin rash around the mouth or elsewhere, swelling of lips, vomiting, wheezing. Eczema worsening in the hours to days after introduction can also indicate egg sensitivity. If you see any of these signs, stop egg and consult your paediatrician before trying again.
Indian Egg Recipes for Babies
Soft scrambled egg yolk — for first introduction. Whisk one yolk with a drop of ghee and cook on very low heat until just set. No salt. Serve a teaspoon as first introduction. Soft scrambled egg is gentler on baby's tummy than hard-boiled.
Egg khichdi — from 8 to 9 months. Make regular moong dal rice khichdi and stir in a beaten egg at the end of cooking, stirring well so the egg cooks through in fine strands. Nutritious and well-tolerated.
Soft egg omelette pieces — from 9 to 10 months. Beat one egg, pour into a non-stick pan with a drop of ghee on low heat, cook without flipping for a very thin soft omelette, and cut into strips for finger food. Add finely chopped spinach or carrot for extra nutrition.
Egg upma — from 10 to 12 months. Make regular suji upma and add beaten egg while stirring. The egg cooks through in soft flakes. Nutritious breakfast that most babies eat well.
Egg for Vegetarian Families
In India, many vegetarian families do not eat egg. This is a personal and cultural choice that should be respected. For families who do not give egg, ensuring adequate Vitamin B12 (from dairy), protein (from dal and dairy), and choline (from other sources like broccoli and Brussels sprouts in smaller amounts) requires conscious food planning. Discuss with your paediatrician.
