When and How to Introduce Solid Foods to Your Baby

The World Health Organisation recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months. After that, solid foods should be introduced alongside continued breastfeeding.

Signs Your Baby is Ready

Watch for these readiness cues around 6 months: can sit up with minimal support, shows interest in food, can hold head steady, and has lost the tongue-thrust reflex.

First Foods to Try

Dal ka paani — A traditional Indian first food. Easy to digest and nutritious.

Rice cereal — Start with a very thin consistency and gradually thicken.

Mashed banana — Naturally sweet, easy to prepare, excellent first fruit.

Pureed sweet potato — Rich in Vitamin A and naturally appealing to babies.

What to Avoid Under 1 Year

No honey, no cow's milk as main drink, no added salt or sugar, no whole nuts, and no unpasteurised foods.
