Baby Care

Preparing for a New Baby in India: The Complete Checklist

Preparing for a new baby can feel like preparing for an expedition to an unknown planet. The baby industry is vast and loud and full of products marketed as essential that are in fact completely optional. This list separates what you genuinely need from what is nice to have from what is unnecessary.

Sleep Essentials (Genuinely Needed)

A firm, flat sleep surface: a cot with a firm mattress, a Moses basket for the early weeks, or a floor bed in a safe environment. A well-fitted mattress with no gaps. Light cotton sheets (2 to 3). Thin cotton blankets or swaddle cloths (4 to 5). A baby monitor if your home is large enough that you cannot hear the baby from other rooms. A white noise machine or app — optional but genuinely helpful for many babies.

Not needed: cot bumpers (safety hazard), sleeping bags until 3 months (most newborns prefer swaddling), elaborate mobiles with music (a simple one works), a dedicated nursing chair (any comfortable chair works).

Feeding Essentials

For breastfeeding: 3 to 5 nursing bras (buy in third trimester when size is more accurate), nursing pads (disposable for early weeks, washable later), lanolin cream for nipple care. A breast pump — a good quality electric double pump if returning to work, a manual pump if occasional expression is needed. Milk storage bags. 2 to 3 bottles even if breastfeeding exclusively — your partner may need to give expressed milk.

For formula feeding: 4 to 6 bottles with stage 1 (slow flow) teats, a steriliser, bottle brush, formula (do not stockpile one brand before birth as you may need to change).

Bathing and Care

A baby bath tub or a clean large basin. A soft baby washcloth. Fragrance-free gentle baby wash. Fragrance-free thick emollient or moisturiser. Virgin coconut oil for massage. A digital thermometer. Infant nail scissors or a file. Nappy rash cream containing zinc oxide. Cotton wool or fragrance-free baby wipes.

Clothing

6 to 8 newborn jhablas or onesies in soft cotton. 4 to 6 pairs of socks. 2 to 3 hats for outdoors or winter. A few cotton blanket suits for cooler regions. Do not buy too many in newborn size — most babies are in it for only 4 to 6 weeks. 0 to 3 months is more versatile. Wash all new clothing before use in fragrance-free, mild detergent.

Travel and Transport

A car seat appropriate for a newborn if you travel by car — this is non-negotiable for safety though unfortunately not routine practice in India. A pram or stroller appropriate for your local terrain. A carrier or sling for hands-free carrying — especially valuable in Indian markets and crowded areas where a pram is impractical.
