Going Back to Work After Baby: A Guide for Indian Working Mothers

India's maternity leave is 26 weeks for the first two children under the Maternity Benefit Act. When that leave ends, many mothers face a whirlwind of emotions and practical challenges.

Childcare Options in India

Family care: Grandparents are the most common childcare solution in India and often the most trusted.

Creche or daycare: Quality creches are growing in Indian cities. Look for CCTV access for parents, qualified caregivers, and low child-to-caregiver ratio (maximum 4:1 for infants).

Home nanny (ayah): A full-time ayah at home is common in Indian urban families. Get references, do a trial period, and have a clear agreement on duties.

Continuing Breastfeeding at Work

The Maternity Benefit Act requires employers with 50 or more employees to provide a creche facility. You are also entitled to nursing breaks. Invest in a good electric breast pump. Pump every 3 hours at work to maintain supply.

The Emotional Side

Guilt is the most common emotion working mothers report. Remember that a happy, fulfilled mother is better for your baby than a miserable one. Give yourself and your baby 2 to 4 weeks to adjust to the new routine.
